Margaret Godfrey of Brampton-en-le-Morthen

Margaret Godfrey was the daughter of William Godfrey of Thonock/Thorrock/Thunnock, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Her sister Mildred married Henry Dawnay (1664-1741), 2nd Viscount Downe, who was the son of John Dawnay, 1st Viscount Downe. They both represented Yorkshire and Pontefract in the House of Commons.

Sir Thomas Daunay of Cowick(d.1566) had married Edith the daughter of Lord George Darcy of Aston. The Darcies owned some of the land in Brampton-en-le-Morthen.

Will of Margaret Godfrey

Will of Margaret Godfrey, Spinster in the Parish of Treeton in the county of York, dated 28th November 1702. Proved 16 August 1705

Sir William Coventry by his last Will left a legacy of £500 but not to be paid to me until such time as I should be married but... that the interest thereof should go forwards towards the ? of my person and whereas the Right Honourable the Lord Viscount Weymouth the surviving Trustee for the said £500 out of his kindness to me hath permitted me to receive the interest thereof and to make use of the said for my own private use, now I do hereby declare that it is my will that mine Executrix hereafter named shall upon all such same and ? of money so by me receive of for the said interest to such person or persons as the same shall happen to die unmarried and wheras the said Right Hon. Lord Viscount Weymouth his executors and Administrators

From the same item I give and bequeath unto my Brother The Lord Downe, and my sister Mildred, his wife to each £20 to buy them mourning.

All the rest of my Goods and Chattels not formerly disposed of I do give and bequeath to my Dear Sister Dorothy Godfrey whom I do hereby appoint Sole Executrix.

Notes:

Gervase Eyre (1669-1704) was the son of Anthony Eyre Esq. of Rampton, Nottinghamshire by his second wife, and succeeded his father in 1671. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, at the age of 14 in 1683. In 1686 he entered the Inner Temple. He served as Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire from 1692, and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1696-1697, and sometimes was resident at Sandbeck in Yorkshire

Viscount Weymouth was the nephew of Sir William Coventry, who was the uncle of George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax.

In 1716 James Sanderson was made Viscount Castleton, of Sandbeck, in the county of York, and subsequently Earl of Castleton.

Christopher Dawnay was a Dawnay of Cowick
