Genealogy
Vesey of Brampton-en-le-Morthen
Hugh Vescy is mentioned in a grant dated 24 Jan 1369, when Isabel, daughter of Hugh de Treton, grants to to Hugh Vescy of Morthen, 7 acres of land lying together in one place called Mylne Ryddyng between the land of John Totehill on the east, and of John Ulley on the west, abutting on Morthyng bronke (Morthen Brook) to the north and on the southern headland abutting upon land of 'dominus' John Tempest, which she inherited after the death of her said father. Witnesses: Roger Mannyngham, William Norys and Adam Reyner of Morthen; John Walkelyn and Richard Atwell of Brampton.
John Vescy: living in Brampton in 1442 when Joan, widow of William Archer of Tickhill, releases to John Vessy of all her right and claim in lands and tenements which the said John had by the gift and feoffment of the said William and Joan in Brampton-en-le-Morthen and Woodhouse.
In his will dated 15th February, 1558 a Roberti Vescie living in the parish of Treeton, bequeathed among other things to his son and heir: two silver spoons and his house at Morthen.

Hunter Comments:William Vesey (1628) commits his son Robert to his beloved kinsmen Mr. Stephen Bright of Carbrook; of William to his beloved kinsman Mr. Richard Boroughs of Tinsley; and Matthew to his eldest son John. He names his cousin Mr. Anthony Rawlinson; cousin George Holmes of Armthorpe, Doncaster; sister in law, Eliz. Vesey of Bringforth (Brinsworth?); nephew William Blythe; kinsman Revel Vesey; nephew Roger Vesey of Creswell.
Elizabeth wife of Anthony Hatfield was a Cowlt of Rotherham. Richard Bunting in 1615 names his cousin Margaret Cowlt; amnd there is a will of Thomas Cowlt of Rotherham, ironmonger, 13 Nov 1613, in which he speaks of his brother Thos. Rawson and his kinsman Mr. William Vesey of Brampton. It is clear that the Cowlts were nearly connected to the Buntings.
Of her relations Cotton and Longley, I can give no further account. Her father speaks in his will of 'Eliz Tailor, dau of my Aunt Revel', and Elizabeth Vesey of Rotherham (Will 1 Dec 1597) speaks of Agnes Revel her daughter, and seens at the same time to be mother of Richard and Margaret Bunting.
A complete set of extracts from the Register of Rotheham would clear up these difficulties.

Hunter comments:Rowland Revel speaks of William Revel of Ricketfield² and Rowland his son servant to Mr. Lister, attorney at York. Coz. William Revel of Cudworth. Coz, Thomas Revel of Whiston and Thomas his son. Coz. Elizabeth, wife of Gervase Hanson.
¹ This Rowland is called of Rotherham in Dugdale's Visitations where is an entry of the
Taylors his descendants. It is quite apparent that he
is the Rowland Revel who married Agnes Vesey at Rotherham 3 June 1590.
Webmaster Notes: ² probably Rickardfeild mentioned with ref to Thomas Revel of Stannington in 1652.
