Poynton
The following information was taken from family papers mostly written by my great-great-great grandfather Robert Martin of Beeston, whose parents were Robert Martin of Temple Normanton and Dorothy Poynton, whose family anciently resided in Ulley (the old Poynton family of Ulley):
My Poynton ancestors fit into my family tree as follows:
One of my great-g-g-g-grandmothers was Dorothy Poynton, born 28 June 1755, in Temple Normanton, Derbyshire, and baptized 20 July 1755, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. She died 22 June 1834 in Temple Normanton.
She married Robert Martin, of Temple Normanton and North Wingfield, on 27.12.1774 at St.Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield; and had issue:
- Martin of Temple Normanton
- Martin of Beeston
- Martin of Car Colston
- Martin of Australia and Argentina
Dorothy was the daughter of Thomas Poynton, of Temple Normanton, and Dorothy Warsdale, of Pleasley, Derbyshire.
Thomas was the son of Robert Poynton of Ulley, born in Hardwick (Hardwick farm), very near Ulley, and who died in 1733, in Ulley, and of Hannah ..... , who died 11 August 1733, in Ulley.
Robert Poynton of Hardwick and Ulley had a brother called John, born in Ulley, married to Catherine ............., who died 20 February 1726.
Robert and Hannah Poynton had issue:
- Poynton of Brampton and Treeton
- Wright of Ulley and Chesterfield
One of Dorothy Martin´s (née Poynton) sisters was Margaret Poynton who married Rowley Clay, Gent. of Hill House, Derbyshire.
As you can see the early generations of Poyntons came namely from Ulley, Hardwick, Treeton and Brampton, and later from Chesterfield, Mansfield, etc. Robert Poynton (my ancestor), and his brother John Poynton were important landowners back in the 1700´s.
One great grandson of Robert Martin and Dorothy Poynton who was my greatgrandfather Prof. Albert Euerby Martin emigrated to Argentina, in 1888, and had issue in Argentina, Australia and the U.S.
He became a well known educationist and scholar in Argentina.
His son Cyril Percy Martin (my grandfather), founded the Martin Shipping Agency of Bahia Blanca, Argentina, and was knighted by King Gustav VI of Sweden, in 1953.
