The Presley Family

The object was to find more about William Presley, landowner of Ulley; also to determine any connection to the Conworth and Radley families - also landowners in Ulley.

I began my research of the Presley family using the IGI Index for Cuckney, Nottinghamshire. The first mention is of a Houmfrey Presley who married Elizabeth Smith on 16th May, 1665 in Cuckney.

Edward Presley married Margaret Radley on 26 October, 1818 at Cuckney, Nottingham.

A William Presley, born about 1733, was married to Mary, Poynton, born about 1747 .

According to IGI they married 29 JAN 1764 at Cuckney, Nottingham.
William was 31 and Mary was 17.

• Catherine, who married Job Conworth
• Sarah, born about 1771
• William, born about 1776

In 1822 a William Pressley , farmer , was living in Dinnington, Yorkshire. It is not clear if this is the landowner William who was living at Ulley Hall in 1833.

By 1856 William was a Schoolmaster at Ulley Village School which was erected by public subscription on a site given by William Presley, Esq. (deceased by 1879).

It is noted in the 1881 directory, that a stained memorial window had been placed in the east end of the church by Job Conworth , Esq to the memory of William Presley Esq.

Other Presley's born or married in Cuckney

Joseph Presley married Martha Skinner on 29/10/1777. They had 5 children the eldest was Ann. Ann PRESLEY (1784-1860). Ann was born on 23 January 1784 in Holbeck, Cuckney, Nottinghamshire. She was baptised on 9 March 1784. She married Thomas REVILL on 29 April 1801 in Parish Church, Clowne, Derbyshire. She died in November 1860 in Clowne, Worksop, Derbyshire. She was buried on 8 November 1860 in Parish Church.

A Samuel Pressley is listed in Kelly's Directory of Derbys, Leics, and Nottingham, 1891, he was a farmer at Hagginfield, Worksop.
